paintings

I have neglected painting (I mean the straightforward-placing-paint-on-canvas-painting) for some time now. Originally a rather classical painter, I ditched it more and more the deeper I got into woodcutting way over a decade ago. But when I was preparing for my solo exhibition “It’s all good.” (June 2022), I dove back into it, deep and relentless - I just felt the urge to paint again, a primeordial and irrational desire to express my thoughts and feelings in a simpler, less constructed & complex and (by technique) more fogiving way, because there was so much in my head and body that wanted to be told in a different way. It was a need, not a logical (or sober) decision. Art never is, nor should it be driven by rational thoughts.

Well. Just my approach, more like a Schiele or Bacon did (who were two of my earliest influences in my youth, as was Pettibon). You can of course paint for whatever reasons you feel suit you best! Painting is such a beautiful techique, I totally forgot about the satisfaction of the process (despite the battles on and in front of the canvas). And, oh, the addictiveness of painting!

That is probably why in a relative short time frame I created 32 paintings in various work series (but with an identical color palette) I made for the above mentioned exhibition. I’ll still view the woodcraft and carving as my main technique, but I am also seriously hooked on painting again, so there’s more to come ...
